NOTE: While CBD is not a cure for these viruses, there is evidence to suggest that it may be helpful in boosting the immune system and reducing the severity of symptoms, especially when taken early.
In 2021 there was a scientific article published (Cannabidiol Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication and Promotes the Host Innate Immune Response) discussing the potential benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) in helping to reduce the incidence of COVID-19 and other RNA viruses. For us at Herbie, this was certainly some exciting research to see. Even better, in January 2022, this work has now been peer-reviewed and the results replicated (Cannabidiol inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication through induction of the host ER stress and innate immune responses) in the journal, Science Advances.
While reading scientific articles can be quite daunting for most mortals, a trained nurse, educator and lecturer, Dr. John Carpenter has done a very thorough (and understandable) breakdown of this new study. We highly recommend watching!
What is CBD?
CBD is a non-intoxicating compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its cousin, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect. Instead, it is believed to have a range of potential health benefits, including reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and reducing anxiety.

How does CBD help prevent COVID and other RNA viruses?
RNA viruses, such as COVID-19, are known to trigger an overactive immune response in some people. This can lead to a condition known as a cytokine storm, where the body produces too many inflammatory molecules. This, in turn, can cause damage to vital organs and lead to severe illness or even death.
CBD is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help to reduce the cytokine storm and prevent the damage it can cause. In addition, CBD has been shown to boost the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells. White blood cells are responsible for fighting off infection, so this can help to prevent the virus from taking hold in the body.
CBD also has antioxidant properties that may help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause damage to cells and tissues. They are produced naturally in the body but can also be produced by environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, and cigarette smoke.
In addition to its potential benefits in preventing COVID-19, CBD may also be helpful in preventing other RNA viruses. These viruses include:
- Common cold
- SARS / MERS
- Hep C and E
Is CBD a cure for COVID or other RNA viruses?
It is important to note that CBD is not a cure for COVID-19 or any other RNA virus. While it may be helpful in preventing the spread of the virus and reducing the severity of symptoms, it should not be considered a replacement for medical treatment.
If you suspect that you have been infected with COVID-19 or any other RNA virus, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Your healthcare provider can provide you with a proper diagnosis and recommend the best course of treatment.
While there is still much to learn about the potential benefits of CBD in preventing COVID-19 and other RNA viruses, the evidence so far is promising. CBD may be helpful in boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation, and protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals. However, it is important to remember that CBD is not a cure for these viruses and should not be considered a replacement for medical treatment.
