Can CBD and CBG Help with Anxiety?
By now, everyone's familiar with CBD and its potential therapeutic properties. It's a compound derived from the hemp plant that interacts with our endocannabinoid system, which helps our bodies maintain homeostasis.
So who's this new face at the cannabinoid party? CBG (cannabigerol) is a less common cannabinoid not found in such abundances as CBD and THC. CBG is the base molecule that the other cannabinoids form from; it interacts with the same receptors as CBD.
However, CBG is still waiting for more official clinical trials to happen. While research is still lacking, the current studies on CBG are showing promising results. So let's discuss the possibilities of using CBD and CBG to help with anxiety.

How are CBD and CBG Different?
The main difference between CBD and CBG is that CBD helps produce and regulate endocannabinoids, and CBG works on the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2).
Most studies show and users report that CBD has more of a response with the physical body, potentially relieving issues like pain and inflammation. On the other hand, CBG is believed to be more effective for neurological concerns. However, because everyone is different, most users see varying effects between the two.
While we've seen many studies on CBD, there is much less research on CBG. However, research suggests that CBG has neuroprotective characteristics that can prevent damage to nerve cells. It's also been shown to help fight bacterial infections and reduce cancerous cells.
Can CBD Help with Anxiety?
A number of studies show positive results for CBD as an anxiety treatment.
- One study showed that CBD could help people with social anxiety reduce their anxiety and discomfort when speaking publicly.
- Another study found that CBD helps reduce general anxiety symptoms.
- A review of 49 studies suggests that CBD could help with various anxiety disorders.
- A more recent study found that CBD may help PTSD patients with their anxiety.
- In another study, people taking CBD saw significant improvement in their anxiety and sleep.
How Much CBD Should I Take for Anxiety?
When it comes to CBD doses, there is no single answer that works for everyone. One study found that a dose of CBD between 300 mg and 600 mg can help reduce anxiety and those with social anxiety disorder. However, we are still looking forward to more research about the most effective dose. In the end, we recommend starting small — you can always increase it as needed.
Can CBG Help With Anxiety and Panic Attacks?
One study found that CBG may have positive results for fighting depression, chronic pain, insomnia, and anxiety. In this study, the efficacy was rated highly, and most participants reported significant improvement in their conditions. First, let's look at some numbers:
- 73.9% of people using CBG-predominant cannabis reported it helps more than conventional medicines for their chronic pain.
- 80% reported improvement in their depression symptoms.
- 73% had improved sleep and less insomnia.
- Finally, 78.3% saw significant improvement in their anxiety symptoms.

In addition, 44% of people in the study reported no adverse effects. The adverse effects that were reported were mild and included dry mouth, sleepiness, increased appetite, and dry eyes.
This is the first patient survey regarding CBG-predominant cannabis and to document the efficacy of these products. The study focused primarily on chronic pain, depression, insomnia, and anxiety. Most respondents reported that the CBG is more effective for them than conventional pharmacotherapy and saw fewer adverse effects and negligible withdrawal symptoms. The study also suggests that we should research more into randomized controlled trials of CBG-based medicines.
How Much CBG Should I Take for Anxiety?
Like CBD, there is no one-size-fits-all dose of CBG to take for anxiety relief. Depending on your body and the product you choose, the effects will vary.
We always recommend starting low and slow so that you can work your way up to a dosage that works the best for you. Every manufacturer should accurately label how much CBG is in the product you buy. For example, our CBG tinctures contain 1000 mg per 30 mL bottle, which translates to about 33 mg per 1 mL dropper. When starting out, we recommend using 0.25 mL to 0.5 mL to see how the CBG affects you. It's always best to start with the lowest recommended dose and gradually increase it if needed.
Is CBG or CBD Better for Anxiety?
While we're still waiting for more studies on CBG, the current studies we've seen suggest that, when taken separately, it may be more effective for anxiety than CBD. However, many people believe that the two compounds are most effective when taken together.
On its own, CBG has a main advantage over CBD for treating anxiety — it directly interacts with the endocannabinoid system and its receptors. Some studies suggest that this interaction can lead to a significant reduction in anxiety symptoms and also provide muscle-relaxing effects.
Can I Take CBD and CBG Together?
When taken together, CBD and CBG may be an effective GABA reuptake inhibitor. They can increase the amount of GABA in your body, which is a neurotransmitter found throughout your nervous system and brain that regulates anxiety, promotes a sense of calmness, and relaxes muscles.
CBD and CBG May be a Helpful Supplement for Managing Anxiety
Studies on CBG are still limited. So, despite the growing interest in its potential benefits, we still know very little about its side effects and how it works alongside other medications.
In addition, even in large dispensaries, it can be challenging to find quality CBG products that aren't combined with THC. We've also seen a quality issue with CBG; always ensure you check third-party certifications to verify the purity and quantity of CBG in any product you might purchase.

Another option is full-spectrum CBD products, which contain a minor selection of cannabinoids, including CBG.
All and all, both CBD and CBG may be helpful for managing anxiety symptoms, and if you're looking for alternative treatment, you might want to consider trying one or a combination of the two.
